Saying the robots are coming is not the same as saying the sky is falling. A recent nuanced report by McKinsey & Company made that clear. The study found that demand for workers could grow largely fueled by technological progress. But based on much of the reporting of the study, one would think it had forecast a coming Depression.

The country is deeply divided. It is divided economically, but also politically and culturally. As these divisions widen, Im convinced its time to revive a commitment to national serviceand to make that commitment universal. Universal could mean mandatory, but more realistically, it should mean the creation of a strong expectation that every U.S. resident give one year of serviceeither military or civilianand be provided with a structured opportunity to do so.
